‘I don’t have time to market my dog business!’
This is the most common answer I get when I am talking to a pet business owner about their marketing.
Often it’s a bit of a smokescreen as the honest answer should be something like;
‘Apart from pissing around on Facebook I really don’t have a plan to market my business at all’.
I can understand this predicament too. I wasted years (and no small amount of cash either) trying all manner of ways to ‘put myself out there’ on social media so I could ‘build my brand’.
Sadly, this strategy didn’t work.
Marketing like Coca Cola and Budweiser won’t cut it in your business.
You need to learn how build a tribe of people who love what you do and then sell lots of your products or services to them over time and posting pretty dog pictures with a watermark of your logo in the corner isn’t going to cut it. Neither is retweeting every other pet business you know or joining Facebook like ladders.
What worked for me was learning how to generate leads so I had a steady stream of prospective clients coming into my business. Then I ruthlessly followed up with them until they bought from me. This is how I built a successful offline dog adventure and training business and an online training community too.
Lead generation and follow up are two things you probably aren’t doing right now. And you aren’t alone.
Any pet business owner can do this and almost all of them should, but hardly anyone ever does.
That’s because learning how to implement a lead generation and a follow system is hard to do. Well it’s simple to learn but difficult to implement. It takes a commitment and level of consistency that most business owners aren’t prepared to do. You have to be prepared to try new things and accept that not all of them will work and not everyone has the patience to build such an operation.
But this opens the way for those pet business owners who are prepared to learn how to market effectively and put the time in that is required to get results.
Which brings us full circle back to, ‘I don’t have time to market my pet business!’
Well you are going to have to make time buttercup because no one is going to do it for you. Cutting down on your daily social media fix (as well as other time wasting activities) is a great place to start.
And it’s in your interest to learn about marketing and not just so you can earn more money either (although that is a good enough reason on it’s own).
You have no doubt spent years learning how to become an awesome ‘trainer’ ‘groomer’ or ‘dog walker’ and you are rightly proud of your achievements. You did this because you love dogs and you love helping people.
Well if you really want to help more people then you need to learn how to market yourself otherwise (inferior) competitors are going to attract more clients and clean up just because they know how to market themselves better than you.
Is that what you want?
You can rely on word of mouth and hope that does the trick. Maybe it will and maybe it won’t.
Ultimately the growth of your business, especially if you are a new, will depend on how well you position yourself so you can attract the kind of clients you really want to work with.
And that’s where lead generation and follow up are crucial and why you need to learn about them if you want to reach the heady business heights your talent deserves.
You have the same amount of time each day as everyone else in business.
It’s up to you to make sure you use that time effectively.
